Schiltach, March 2010. Glorious sandy beaches and pounding surf in the west, extensive tidal flats in the east, primordial dunes and green ponds – small wonder that Sylt is often called the Pearl of the North Sea. Covering an area of about 99 square kilometers, Sylt is Germany’s largest North Sea island, and with about 50,000 beds and more than 800,000 visitors each year, it is probably also the most popular one. Contrasting with Sylt’s traditional thatched-roof architecture, the new BUDERSAND Hotel – Golf & Spa – Sylt is located in Hörnum, on the southern tip of the island. The 5-star superior hotel, a structure in harmony with the surrounding landscape, combines luxury and high values with a natural lightness.

Dialog between architecture and nature
The privately managed hotel, which opened its doors in May 2009, lies embedded in a spacious seaside dunescape right next to the Hörnum yacht harbor. On a site measuring 73 hectares in total, the project principal and owner Claudia Ebert and her son Simon Ebert created the golf club Budersand Sylt in the year 2008: an 18-hole golf course with clubhouse and restaurant. A year later, they built the new luxury hotel comprising a total of 79 rooms and suites on the southern boundary of the property. “No standard solution would have suited this unique location; instead, our aim was to provide a real-life experience about makes this place special,” said the owner of the hotel. The right solution was found by the Berlin-based architecture firm Dierks, Kunze und Oevermann – or dko for short.
